From Recognition to Impact: The Stronghold Food Pantry Story
One Military Spouse. One Garage. One Movement.
In 2022, Monica Bassett was recognized as the Armed Forces Insurance Army Spouse of the Year.
At the time, Monica was already demonstrating what is possible when a military spouse sees a need and takes action. At Fort Riley, she began providing food and assistance to military families out of her garage.
What began as a simple act of service soon became something much bigger.
But Stronghold Food Pantry’s story is also a story about the power of collaboration—and what can happen when recognition, relationships and resources come together around a shared commitment to military families.
The Military Spouse of the Year Connection
The Military Spouse of the Year® program provided Monica with a platform to share her story, amplify the issue of food insecurity among military families and connect with individuals and organizations who could help turn her grassroots effort into something sustainable.
Without the collaboration and relationships created through the Military Spouse of the Year® program, the Stronghold Food Pantry initiative as it exists today would not have happened.
The program helped shine a national light on Monica’s work and created opportunities for her vision to connect with the resources and support needed to grow.
Her recognition as the 2022 Army Spouse of the Year became more than an award.
It became a catalyst for action.
From a Garage to a Permanent Home
As Monica’s vision grew, Stronghold Food Pantry needed a permanent home.
That is where another important partnership came together.
Today, Stronghold’s headquarters is located in the Armed Forces Insurance building at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Armed Forces Insurance provides the pantry with rent-free space, allowing Stronghold to maintain a permanent presence in the military community while directing more resources toward its mission of serving military families.
This is a partnership that goes beyond traditional sponsorship.
AFI is providing the physical infrastructure that enables Stronghold to operate, serve families, coordinate volunteers and continue expanding its reach.
The connection is especially meaningful because AFI’s relationship with Stronghold began through the very program that recognized Monica’s leadership: the Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year® program.
The Ripple Effect of Recognition
Monica’s story illustrates why investing in military spouse leadership can have an impact far beyond the individual being recognized.
The Military Spouse of the Year program recognized a military spouse who was already making a difference.
That recognition helped amplify her voice.
Her voice helped bring greater attention to military family food insecurity.
Community partners rallied around her vision.
Armed Forces Insurance provided a permanent home for the organization.
And Stronghold Food Pantry grew into a resource serving military families well beyond its original community.
What started with one spouse helping families from her garage at Fort Riley has grown into an organization serving military communities across the country and overseas.
The Impact
Stronghold now reports reaching more than 18,000 people, distributing more than 237,000 pounds of food and supporting more than 202,000 meals across 72 military installations in 26 states.
Behind those numbers is a much more powerful story:
A military spouse saw a problem.
She acted.
A program recognized her leadership.
A community believed in her vision.
A corporate partner provided resources and a place to grow.
And thousands of military families are now benefiting from that collective effort.
The Bigger Lesson
The Stronghold story demonstrates the unique power of the Military Spouse of the Year® program.
Recognition can be a catalyst.
When we identify military spouses who are making a difference, give them a platform to share their stories and connect them with people who can help, the impact doesn’t end with an award.
Sometimes, it creates an entirely new organization.
Sometimes, it creates a new solution to a longstanding problem.
And sometimes, one military spouse’s idea becomes a movement that changes thousands of lives.
One spouse.
One garage.
One opportunity to be heard.
One powerful collaboration.
Thousands of families impacted.
That is the power of investing in military spouses.
